It was in Toulouse that La Seconde Méthode ('The Second Method') started out two years ago, and the encounter between Chadian musician Abaye 'l'enfant noir' and three French musicians was clearly an important one. Just six months after their first rehearsal, the group recorded El Kanémy, a mini-album of six dry, tight, tense tracks. 'These sober little rhythmic motifs swing infectiously, solidly anchored by Pascal Renouard's drums and Antoine Dubost's bass, while guitarist Nicolas Lafourest adds modest, discreet touches to the relentless clockwork, but dazzles when he has his word to say. Chadian Abakar Adam Abaye, child of oral tradition, a sleepwalking griot with extraordinary delivery hypnotised by his own litany, stands at the helm, eyes half-closed, beaded with sweat, while his crew, transfixed, holds it steady against winds and tides.' - from the Ouvertures des Clôtures festival Pruines, 2011

Abaye l'enfant noir Originally from Chad, Abakar Adam Abaye, "the black child", has travelled throughout Africa, Europe and North America with his n'goni, and has been based in Toulouse for the past seven years. Ever in search of new musical avenues to explore, his rock storytelling concert Sans Mentir ("No Lies"), accompanied by Mathieu Sourisseau on guitar and Pascal Portejoie on drums, left its mark, and keen to develop other musical forms, he invited Antoine Dubost, Nicolas Lafourest and Pascal Renouard to join him in La Seconde Méthode.
Antoine Dubost took up the double bass in 2000, and has devoted himself to the instrument ever since, playing jazz, rock and chanson française.
Self-taught guitarist Nicolas Lafourest has developed an individual and instinctive musical style, rough, raw and impulsive. His solo project Forêt is an intimate and direct collection of lonely guitar moments, a gentle stroll through a world of wandering twists and turns. Lafourest also plays in Cannibales et Vahinés (with Marc Démereau and Fabien Duscombs), in Jo Beans with Mathieu Blanc and with G.W. Sok (ex The Ex), and in numerous mixed-media projects, improvised or otherwise.
Self-taught percussionist / drummer Pascal Renouard began playing in 1986, moving from wild rock to 50s blues and joining the CMCN (Centre Musical et Créatif de Nancy). Several extended trips to West Africa enabled him to master the rhythms he uses to great effect in La Seconde Méthode.
