Argentinian twin sisters Laura et Gianna Caronni were born in a family of Swiss, Italian, Russian and Spanish origins, where the music of Opera and Tango intertwined. They studied classical music, moved to France in 1998, where they played with Argentinian musicians (Juan Cedron, Juan Carlos Cáceres...). The sisters’ music reflects all these musical influences and something more, intimate and personal, that only belongs to them.

CD review in fROOTS magazine, january/February 2012 issue LAS HERMANAS CARONNI Per the Argentine Academia de Folklore, the bagüala is the pentatonic 'deep song' (cante jondo) of the northeast countryside, resonant with the nation's sublimated indigenous heritage and a yearning for places, people and things forever and always just out of reach. For twins Laura (cello, voice) and Gianna (clarinet, voice) Caronni, from an intensely musical family, conservatory-trained in Rosario, 'baguala' is an apt metaphor for the sisters' remarkable, entirely original blend of classical, folkloric, theatrical and improvisatory strains from Argentina, Brazil, France (their current domicile), Italy, Spain and the African continent. Their eclectic lyricism, evocative vocal harmonies and inventive stretching and recombination of cello and clarinet technique reveal a sublime poetic mastery that defies categorisation. Beide singen und liefern auf ihrem Album derart zerbrechliche und intelligente Musik ab, wie man sie schon seit einigen Jahren nicht gehört hat. Als Duett ist ihr Sound voll von Intimität. Gleichzeitig erscheint ihr Sound äußerst üppig, was auf die einfallsreichen und minimalistischen Arrangements zurückzuführen ist. LAS HERMANAS CARONNI http://www.coasttocoast.nl/ Deze Argentijnse dames zijn tien minuten na elkaar geboren en komen uit een muzikale familie waar iedereen zingt en instrumenten bespeelt. Hun grootmoeder speelde meerdere tango’s uit haar hoofd, hun vader zong vaak zijn liederen uit Italië, hun neefjes speelden gitaarliederen rond het kampvuur en dan hebben ze ook nog een alom geprezen pianist als oom, een emigrant uit Italië. De zusjes hebben muziek dus echt met de paplepel ingegoten gekregen. Eind jaren ‘90 vertrokken Laura en Gianna Caronni, een paar maanden na elkaar, richting Europa om er hun muzikale studie te vervolgen. Deze hadden ze in Paranà (hun geboortestad) gestart en in Buenos Aires voortgezet. In Frankrijk perfectioneerden ze hun techniek met minder klassieke invloeden. In deze tijd legden ze veel contacten in de muziekwereld en al gauw toerden ze over de hele wereld met dansers, theaterstukken, dichters en poppenspelers. Zo bepaalden ze beetje bij beetje hun muzikale richting en schreven steeds meer hun eigen materiaal. Vanaf 2004 vallen ze steeds meer op in de internationale muziekscene en nu is het tijd voor hun eerste eigen album. Baguala de La Siesta gaat voornamelijk over familie en hun moederland Argentinië: het land van hun jeugd en herinneringen, waar ze altijd naar blijven verlangen. Zoals een rivier in de stroming van de oceaan verdwijnt, zo word je als luisteraar meegenomen op een reis langs de dertien stukken op dit album, voornamelijk geschreven door de zusjes zelf. De traditionele Argentijnse ritmes zijn verweven met muzikale invloeden uit o.a. Brazilië, Spanje en Afrika. De rijke tonen van hun cello en klarinetspel vloeien feilloos door elkaar heen en worden versterkt door de stemmen van de zusjes. Laura en Gianna Caronni zijn veelal beïnvloed door klassieke Zuid-Amerikaanse tekstschrijvers, zangers en muzikanten als Atahualpa Yupanqui, Alfredo Zitarrosa en Homero Exposito. Ook erg belangrijk waren hun grootouders, wiens invloeden en herinneringen voortleven in hun tango’s en liedteksten.
Hay gente que vive toda su vida en un mismo país, y de ese país en un mismo pueblo, sus raíces son hondas, sus tradiciones únicas, los otros países les resultan raros, exóticos, diferentes. Y hay gente que viaja, migra, se va. La Argentina es un país de inmigrantes. Algunos vinieron huyendo, del hambre, de la guerra, de la tiranía, de la discriminación. Otros llegaron por el afán de aventura. Aquí se unieron, se mezclaron, entramaron sus raíces, sus costumbres, sus comidas, sus canciones. Amaron la tierra que dejaban y amaron también la tierra a la que habían llegado. Aprendieron unos de otros, enriquecieron las tradiciones con sus propios legados. Casi ningún pueblo nos es ajeno y sin embargo, con el tiempo, adquirimos una identidad. Somos Argentinos. Un universitario ruso judío salió de su casa de Kiev una noche sin despedirse y atravesó el mundo para seguir a la mujer que amaba. Sus padres la llevaron lejos, a la Argentina, para huir de los pogroms. Ese muchacho nunca volvió a ver a su madre y sus hermanos. Un muchacho suizo italiano vino a hacer fortuna, se casó, tuvo hijos, adquirió propiedades y volvió a Suiza, allí compró una casa, tuvo mas hijos, vivió de rentas hasta que la vida hizo que sus hijos volvieran a la Argentina. Uno de ellos se casaría con la hija del hombre de Kiev. Dos hermanos andaluces decidieron tomar un barco para América en busca de un futuro para sus familias. No pudieron tomar el mismo barco… nunca se volvieron a encontrar. La hija de un pintor italiano se enamoró de un comerciante irlandés y se fue a vivir en plena selva chaqueña… hasta que lo convenció de mudarse a la ciudad. Su nieto se casaría con la hija del andaluz. Es la Argentina, una familia puede tener en su seno gente de todos los credos y de todas las etnias, las italianas aprendieron a hacer paella, las andaluzas a hacer ravioles, las árabes a hacer bortsh y todos aprendieron a hacer empanadas y asado. Y a cantar, opera, zarzuela, tango, milonga, zambas, chacareras. Es una tierra con nostalgias de horizonte, con gente que llegó y gente que se va, que vuelve a alguna de las patrias de sus abuelos, que recibió a todos y que a veces los vuelve a desparramar por el mundo.
